The Solid State Physics Laboratory of the Department of Physics at the University of Patras was founded by Professor Emeritus Georgios Priftis. It has a long history in researching the structure of matter and studying the physical properties of solids.
Solid State Physics Laboratory
Welcome to the official website of the Solid State Physics Laboratory, based in the Department of Physics at the University of Patras. The laboratory forms a core hub for research and education, focusing on the study of the structure and properties of condensed matter.
Historical Background
The Solid State Physics Laboratory was founded during the early years of operation of the University of Patras, with the mission to advance scientific research in the field of Solid State Physics. In the years that followed, the laboratory evolved into a modern research space. It was staffed with experienced academic and technical personnel and equipped with modern instruments for conducting basic and applied research.
The Founder: Professor Georgios Priftis
Special mention belongs to the founder and visionary of the laboratory, Professor Emeritus Georgios Priftis. Through his rich research and teaching work, Professor G. Priftis laid the foundations for the development of Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Patras. His dedication to science and academic teaching inspired generations of physicists, while his contribution remains decisive for the subsequent course and development of the laboratory.
Research Activity
Today, the laboratory continues the tradition of excellence bequeathed by its founder, actively operating in cutting-edge fields of modern Physics. Its research directions include, among others:
- Structural Characterization of Materials & Interfaces: Utilizing X-ray and neutron diffraction and reflectivity techniques (X-ray Diffraction/Reflectivity, Neutron Reflectivity).
- Surface Phenomena: Research concerning techniques such as Surface Plasmon Resonance and the study of biomolecule layers.
